St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel

St. Pauli Elbtunnel, Hamburg, Deutschland

How about taking a walk to the other side of the Elbe River – below the water? No problem! For more than a hundred years, both shores of the Elbe have been connected via Alter Elbtunnel (Old Elbe Tunnel or St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel). Thanks to this historic tunnel, you can easily get to the other side, either by foot, bike or car – all day, every day. On the St. Pauli side, you can take the stairs or one of the four lifts to descend 24 metres below the ground. Once you’re down there, a fascinating view of the artistically tiled tunnel unfolds. From here, the Steinwerder side is just a, well, stone’s throw away. After a mere 500 metres, you’ll be rewarded with an amazing view of the Hamburg skyline, including the Landungsbrücken piers, the Elbphilharmonie and St. Michael’s Church. Definitely a must-see!
